Some of Carmen Dell'Orefice's earliest Vogue magazine photos were for the Fables Retold layout that was arranged and photographed by Irving Penn in the December 15, 1946 issue:

Carmen commented about these photos in the book Staying Beautiful, written by Carmen and Alfred Allan Lewis (Harper & Row, 1984):

Penn was about to embark on a wonderful series of fairy-tale pictures involving some of the great celebrities of the day and one central figure playing the title roles of Cinderella, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. I wanted it because it would give me the chance to be what I was, a young girl, instead of what they called me, timeless, whatever that was supposed to mean. My time was adolescence, and I was enjoying it too much to want to give it up.
